The city of Milan was at the
center of the Shoah in Italy. Many of the jewish deportees
from Italy passed trhough Milan after the German occupation
of Italy (september 1943).
Two of the town central locations utilized for the deportation
of jews are still in the state in which they were more than
60 years ago.
The San Vittore prison and the Central
Station.
In this second location at ground level, track
number 21, 600 deportees were taken in the cold
winter morning of january 30, 1944 until they filled a complete
train.
On this convoy were transported 40 children of all ages.
Among them Sissel
Vogelmann (of 8) and Liliana
Segre (of 13). link a Sissel web e a testimonianza
Segre
The oldest passenger was Esmeralda Dina (of 88).
After seven terrible days on the train they arrived at their
unknown destination: Auschwitz Birkenau. It was the morning
of February 6.
In a few hours 500 of them were killed with the gas and burned
in the Krematoria.
Sissel and her mother followed this fate. Liliana luckily
survived to her father Alberto to give us a great lesson of
dignity and life. Trhough her accounts we have a clear and
dramatic picture of life and death in the Birkenau compound.
Tens of thousand students, up to date, have heard Liliana
testimonies all over Italy.
Sissel only left child sketches, a few photographs some letter
to the grand parents.
For the sake of Memory of these and the other italian deportees
we invite everyone to sign our petition to the authorities
and send theyr messages (click on the end of the page bar)
Our goal is the estabilishment of a living memorial of the
Shoah in Milano located at Track 21.
We forecast a flow of more than 20.000 students per year
to visit the memorial and its multimedia exhibition.
We expect turists to come to Milano as they do in Berlin
or other towns with a memorial.
We hope the common people who already signed our petition
will be our ambassadors to the world and the italian authorities.
In fall 2004 Milan will have a magnificent new exhibition
area, but future without Memory is bound to create always
more tensions in the society.
Let's leave from Track 21 for a better future.
